The Deposit Return Scheme Company Calls In The Administrators And The Minister Survives A Vote Of No Confidence

21st June 2023

Lorna Slater has survived a vote of no confidence by the conservatives in her position as circular economy minister, with opposition attempts to oust her failing at Holyrood. On Tuesday evening MSPs voted down the motion by 68 votes to 55. Votes were made along party lines, however the SNP's Fergus Ewing rebelled and voted in favour.

This happened on the same day that Circularity Scotland the company leading the the way on the deposit return scheme called in the administrators having the previous week sent all of its employees home.

There are growing expectations that many of the companies who have spent significant sums of money on preparing for the deposit return scheme will sue the Scottish Government for compensation.

Circularity Scotland was in charge of the DRS, which has now been delayed until 2025. But it may need another company to take over unless Circularity Scotland can be saved. The taxpayer may yet have to cough up more millions but there will be another election before that happens.
