The Association of Mirror Pensioners has published a short obituary for Bill Mowatt who died on 8 August 2023. Not included is the fact the Bill was a Highland councillor for 16 years. In more recent years he was chairman of Gills Harbour Trust and often highlighted in articles the benefits of using it to base various marine vessels. He also regularly sent articles to newspapers and this web site.

BILL MOWATT, the Daily Record's former Inverness-based reporter, died on August 8 [2023], aged 80. With colleagues, he covered part of the vast area of Highland Scotland. Bill was an expert on the oil industry and covered and broke many oil related stories. Colleagues knew him as a "one off".

After leaving Wick High School, Bill became the first member of his family to go to university. He later joined the Caithness Courier, then based in Thurso, as editor. As well as writing prolifically about atomic power, reporting on council meetings and covering the full range of other local issues, he began a column under the pseudonym Tim Hunt to showcase the thriving 1960s Caithness music scene.

In 1968 Bill was head-hunted by the Daily Record. He stayed with the Record for many years into the infamous Robert Maxwell era. He left the company in a redundancy deal, and joined an Inverness-based news agency.

Malcolm Speed, AMP committee member, said: "Bill was a top reporter with a good technical grasp of the oil industry, as well as covering mountain-climbing related stories."
