New Resources Released To Support The Health Of Small Business' Workforce

18th September 2023

Small and medium-sized businesses have access to new tools to enhance employee well-being at work.

The resources, a video and guide, have been developed by the Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) and the Commercial Occupational Health Providers Association (COHPA) to coincide with Occupational Health Awareness Week (OHAW) 2023 (18th-24th September 2023).

The video, Health at Work: Why Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) Need Occupational Health Support, is presented by occupational health expert Dr. Clare Fernandes.

It is available in both short and extended versions and highlights the benefits of occupational health and practical workplace health insights for SMEs.

COHPA's guide: A Guide for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to Occupational Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace offers step-by-step instructions and advice on occupational health, its importance, and useful links for those seeking further information.

Occupational health, experts in employee health and well-being in the workplace, play a crucial role in preventing absences due to illness, managing workplace health issues, and ensuring employees remain healthy, and productive.

OHAW 2023 Theme: Occupational Health in Small Businesses

OHAW emphasises the importance of occupational health for SMEs. While most larger companies provide occupational health, this is less often provided by SMEs. This impacts on their productivity and their bottom line.

SOM and COHPA have made these resources available, with the aim of encouraging SMEs to take occupational health more seriously.

Commercial Occupational Health Providers Association (COHPA) Association Manager, Anna Jones, said, "Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, but they are susceptible to the negative effects of poor health at work.

"COHPA has developed this user-friendly, accessible, and informative guide to help businesses recognise the pivotal role that occupational health can play in safeguarding the well-being of their workforce."

Nick Pahl, CEO of the Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM), said, "Statistics show the importance of workplace health.

"Businesses across Britain understand that a healthy workforce means enhanced productivity.

"By producing this video, we aim to assist SMEs in making informed decisions and provide support to make occupational health a cornerstone of their operations."
