Bankers Out Of Touch - Natwest Boss Makes 'Staggering' Claim That It's 'Not That Difficult' To Buy First Home

7th January 2024

NatWest's Sir Howard Davies, was asked by BBC Radio 4's Today programme when it would be easier for people in the UK to get on the property ladder and in response he said: "I don't think it is that difficult".

NatWest's chairman has sparked a backlash after claiming it was not "that difficult" to get on the property ladder in the UK today - and Brits are not happy.

Sir Howard Davies, was asked by BBC Radio 4's Today programme when it would be easier for people in the UK to get on the property ladder. In response, the Natwest boss said: "I don't think it is that difficult at the moment." When pressed on this, said that prospective buyers had to save, and that was the "way it always used to be".

Richard Murphy, professor of accounting practice at Sheffield University, branded his remarks "staggering".

"Sir Howard Davies, chair of NatWest Bank, has just told Radio 4 that he does not think it is hard for people to get on the housing ladder in the UK.," he said. That is a staggering demonstration of the disconnect between bankers and reality in this country."

One X - formerly Twitter user said: "#r4today has Howard Davies from #NatWest saying it's not hard to buy a #House!!!!!! how out of touch can you be???"
