Bank fraud scams are illegal attempts to obtain money or other property from a financial institution or its depositors. Some common types of bank fraud scams include:
Phishing
Scammers trick bank customers into giving away confidential information, such as passwords, PINs, or security answers. These scams often appear as emails that seem to be from the bank.
Fake calls
Scammers may call, text, or email, claiming to be from the bank, police, or a telecoms company. They may ask for personal or financial information, or for you to transfer money.
Unauthorised transactions
Scammers may convince you to give them your bank or card details, or use your card without your permission.
To avoid bank fraud scams, you can:
Be wary of any calls, texts, or emails that ask for personal or financial information, or for you to transfer money.
If you feel something is suspicious, hang up and call your bank or card issuer on their advertised number.
Check your bank or building society's website for advice on how to make your account more secure.
Report any suspected scams to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or using their online reporting tool.
