The successful installation of 4G equipment at Corrour station on the West Highland Line is providing a vital online connection in one of Scotland's most remote areas.

Since its installation in July 2024, ScotRail has seen more than 40,000 people connect to the service, greatly improving digital access for railway customers and the local community.

Corrour, known as one of the UK’s most remote railway stations, is only accessible by train, foot, or bike.

The introduction of reliable 4G coverage is a significant step forward in supporting local tourism and enhancing passenger experience on the West Highland Line.

The 4G connection, which extends a few hundred metres from the station, utilises cutting-edge satellite connectivity supplied by Clarus, integrated with ScotRail’s network technology. This ensures a resilient and high-speed internet connection, despite Corrour’s extreme remoteness and lack of conventional broadband infrastructure.

The 4G cellular broadcast equipment and service are provided by Wave Mobile as part of a Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)-funded research, development, and innovation project, led by Virgin Media O2.

The cellular mast equipment was installed by ATS Ltd on behalf of Scottish Futures Trust, further enhancing digital connectivity in rural Scotland.

Alan Manclark, ScotRail Head of IT, said, "This project is a fantastic example of how innovative technology can transform connectivity in remote locations.

"Providing 4G at Corrour station ensures that ScotRail customers, visitors, and local residents can stay connected, whether for work, travel updates, or simply keeping in touch with friends and family.

“ScotRail is committed to improving digital access across Scotland’s Railway, and we’re delighted to see such high engagement with this service."

Neil Rutherford, Senior Associate Director for Digital Connectivity at Scottish Futures Trust, said:

“Our Digital Connectivity team is working with partners across Scotland to develop and deliver new, innovative solutions that enhance sustainable outdoor connectivity in rural areas.

“Building on our expertise of delivering the masts in Scottish Government’s Scottish 4G Infill Programme, the innovative connectivity solution delivered at Corrour station is a great example of this, delivering a difference to all those who connect and visit the station.”
