Recent data indicates that food prices in the UK are rising faster than overall inflation.
While overall inflation has fallen to 2.5% (CPI) in the 12 months to December 2024, food inflation has remained at 2.0% (CPIH).
In January 2025, the latest ONS data showed overall inflation at 3% (CPI) and food inflation at 3.3% (CPIH), meaning food prices rose faster than overall inflation.
When food inflation is higher than overall inflation, it means the cost of groceries is increasing at a faster rate than other items and services.
In summary, while overall UK inflation has slowed down, food prices are still rising more rapidly, impacting the cost of groceries for households.
Prices for some veggies are rising due to shortages in crops such as broccoli and cabbages. Peas have also risen for various reasons.
The turmoil caused by American tariff threats may also be added to the mix in coming months.
