ScotRail reminds customers of timetable improvements coming this weekend

15th May 2025

ScotRail is reminding customers that significant timetable improvements will come into effect from Sunday, 18 May, with a focus on enhancing rail connections for Fife and other parts of the country.

The updated timetable will see more frequent services to and from Leven, improving links to Edinburgh and better connecting communities throughout Fife. To support increased demand, additional carriages are being added to some trains during the busiest times, providing more seats for customers.

Customers in the Highlands will also benefit from revised departure times for some early morning services, creating a more balanced range of travel options from the Kyle of Lochalsh and Tain areas. A late-night service to Tain is being reintroduced on a trial basis, and a new direct morning service from Inverness to Edinburgh will offer a convenient option for commuters and tourists alike.

These improvements are part of ScotRail's continued commitment to better connectivity, greater capacity, and more reliable services for customers across Scotland's Railway.

The key highlights of the May 2025 timetable include:
More frequent Leven services: Two trains per hour throughout the day, with the second service operating via Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath, improving links across Fife.

Better connections to Dundee: Revised timings reduce tight connections at Kirkcaldy, making travel from Leven to Dundee more convenient.

Late-night service to Tain: Reintroduced as a trial, supporting evening travel from Inverness and made possible by adjustments to underused morning services from Elgin.

Direct morning service from Inverness to Edinburgh Waverley: A new morning service replaces an Inverness to Glasgow train and offers a direct route to the capital for commuters and leisure travellers.

Reintroduction of services between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central following completion of modernisation work on the line.

While many changes across the network are minor, ScotRail is urging all customers to check their journeys in advance, as train times may have changed.

Customers can view updated train times at scotrail.co.uk or via the ScotRail app. Timetables are also available to download from the ScotRail website.

Scott Prentice, ScotRail Strategy and Planning Director, said:
"We’re reminding customers that our enhanced timetable goes live this Sunday. These changes will transform travel options for people across Fife and other parts of Scotland.

"Whether it’s more frequent services, better connections, or more seats on trains, we’re committed to delivering a rail service that is safe, reliable, and encourages people to choose rail as their preferred mode of sustainable transport."
