Battery energy storage system (BESS) developer Root-Power has announced that it has broken ground on a new BESS project in Scotland.
Dounreay BESS, located at Dounreay near to the Dounreay nuclear site, Thurso KW14 7RE, is a large-scale project with a 34MW capacity and 68MWh of storage, sufficient to power 80,000 homes for two hours.
The project adds a further 34MW to Root-Power's growing pipeline of projects across the UK and helps towards reaching the Government's Net Zero targets. The remote location of the site has been carefully chosen as it's anticipated to see major overhaul in the coming years with the growth of offshore and onshore wind in the area and is positioned close to the network connection points for some of the nearby islands.
