What's happening with the post office enquiry today?

8th July 2025

Big day for the Post Office Horizon Inquiry — the first volume of its final report is being published today, Tuesday 8 July 2025. This has been a long time coming and it is not over yet.

Here's what's unfolding:

Volume 1 Focus: Human Impact & Compensation

This part of the report dives into the devastating personal consequences of the Horizon scandal and how victims have been compensated (or not).

Chair Sir Wyn Williams will make a public statement at 12:30pm, following the report's release at 12 noon.

Victims Still Struggling for Redress

Many subpostmasters say the compensation process has been "retraumatising", with red tape and delays making it hard to get fair payouts.

Lawyers warn it could take another 2-3 years to resolve all claims.

Some victims have accepted fixed offers (e.g. £600,000) just to end the ordeal, fearing they’d get less through individual assessments.

Compensation Backlog & Criticism

June saw the lowest number of payouts this year—just 514, despite thousands still waiting.

Campaigners like Sir Alan Bates call the schemes "quasi-kangaroo courts", and many want an independent body to take over from the government.

What’s Next?

Future volumes of the report will cover governance failures at the Post Office and Fujitsu.

The inquiry will also begin Maxwellisation, giving those criticized a chance to respond before final conclusions.
