Economic activity and social change in the UK real-time indicators 10 July 2025

Overall retail footfall increased by 1% in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week and increased by 4% when compared with the equivalent week of 2024; high street footfall saw the biggest increase when compared with the equivalent week of 2024 at 5%, while retail park and shopping centre footfall increased by 3% and 2% respectively (MRI OnLocation).

Total Revolut debit card expenditure increased by 2% in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week and increased by 14% when compared with the equivalent week of 2024 (Revolut).

In June 2025, around one in four (26%) adults reported that they would be unable to afford an unexpected, but necessary expense of £850; this is the highest proportion reported since September 2024 (initial findings for June 2025 from our OPN, publishing on 18 July 2025).

The total number of ship visits to major UK ports decreased by 4% in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week and decreased by 9% when compared with the equivalent week of 2024 (exactEarth).

The seasonally adjusted total number of flights decreased by 3% in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week but increased by 1% when compared with the equivalent week of 2024 (EUROCONTROL).

The System Average price of Gas decreased by 5% to 2.697 pence per kilowatt hour (p/kWh) in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week, while the System price of electricity increased by 42% to 7.675p/kWh over the same time period (Elexon, National Gas Transmission).

The total number of Energy Performance Building Certificates (EPCs) for new dwellings across England and Wales decreased by 16% in the week to 6 July 2025 compared with the previous week; for existing dwellings, it decreased by 2% over the same period (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government).
