23rd July 2025
Drivers turning 70 will still renew their licences every three years, but from July 2025 the DVLA is tightening health checks to enhance road safety for an ageing population.
Overview of Changes
Renewal frequency remains every three years after age 70; first reminder arrives 90 days before your birthday.
Free renewal continues, with both online and postal options available.
You can keep driving while your renewal is processed, provided your current licence is valid and your application meets DVLA conditions.
Key New Requirements
GP-signed medical certificates may be requested when you declare a new health condition or are flagged by DVLA systems.
Vision and cognitive assessments could be imposed on high-risk or randomly selected drivers to verify reaction times and decision-making ability.
Random spot-checks by the DVLA may trigger extra documentation or testing even if you haven't self-reported issues.
Renewal Process (July 2025 Onwards)
DVLA reminder posted 90 days before renewal date
Complete online or fill in D46P/D1 form and return by post
Provide GP-signed D4 medical form if requested
Submit any vision or cognitive test reports as instructed
Await DVLA decision—you may continue driving until your current licence expires
Preparing for Your Renewal
Book appointments early: Arrange GP and optometrist visits well in advance to avoid last-minute delays
Keep records updated: Maintain clear documentation of any health conditions, treatments, or specialist reports
Be transparent: Honest self-declarations on your renewal form help prevent insurance or licence complications
Plan alternatives: Explore local community transport or family support in case restrictions are imposed or renewal is delayed
Beyond July 2025, drivers may see further bespoke checks based on emerging data—stay tuned to GOV.UK or your DVLA correspondence for updates on digital portals and possible regional pilot schemes for senior mobility.
