Back in September 2024
Independent Alliance: Jeremy Corbyn and four independent MPs form new group
With five MPs in the House of Commons, the group is the same size as Reform UK and the DUP, and larger than the Greens, who have four MPs.
They were all elected as independent MPs for the first time in July, with all five taking a pro-Palestine stance in Labour-supporting constituencies with large Muslim populations.
The Independent Alliance parliamentary group, consisted of former Labour leader Mr Corbyn, Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, and Iqbal Mohamed.

Mr Adam unseated leading Labour politician Jonathan Ashworth to become MP for Leicester South, while Mr Corbyn won the Islington North seat he had held since 1983 as a Labour MP before he was ousted from the party.

The sands are shifting....
Who are the 7 Labour MPs suspended?
The seven Labour MPs suspended for six months were John McDonnell, Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Imran Hussain, Apsana Begum and Zarah Sultana, who subsequently sat as independents but remained members of the Labour Party.

Diane Abbott, the UK's longest-serving female MP and former Shadow Home Secretary, was suspended again from the Labour Party as of July 17, 2025, following controversial remarks about racism.

Abbott defended comments she originally made in a 2023 letter to The Observer, where she argued that racism based on skin colour is different from prejudice faced by Jewish, Irish, and Traveller communities. Although she apologized at the time and was readmitted to Labour before the 2024 election, she recently reaffirmed her views in a BBC Radio 4 interview:

"Clearly, there must be a difference between racism which is about colour and other types of racism... I just think that it's silly to try and claim that racism which is about skin colour is the same."

This prompted Labour to administratively suspend her pending investigation.

She said: "It is obvious this Labour leadership wants me out."

She defended her remarks as "factually correct" and expressed frustration at being labeled antisemitic.

Allies like John McDonnell and Owen Jones have publicly supported her, saying she was describing the lived experience of anti-Black racism.

Abbott now sits as an independent MP.

Her suspension comes amid broader tensions in Labour, including the suspension of four other MPs for rebelling on welfare reform.

Speculation is growing that she may join Jeremy Corbyn's new party, which aligns with her political stance.
