As Halloween approaches, it is important to know how to avoid potentially dangerous goods, from counterfeit makeup to costumes and products that do not meet UK safety standards.
Last year, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) carried out tests on 128 costumes aimed at children under seven years old.
More than 80% failed basic safety tests, including those for flammability and strangulation from cords.
Costumes were purchased from a range of online marketplaces and tested against the Safety of Toys Regulations 2011.
All those which failed have since been removed from sale by the platforms.
Several organisations have published tips to help you stay safe and enjoy Halloween:
Costumes
The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has advised consumers to be wary of counterfeit Halloween costumes, which may not have been subjected to the same testing standards as genuine items and could be unsafe.
Has it got a CE marking? Be aware that CE markings can be faked by counterfeiters or those looking to cut corners.
Who are you buying it from? Are you in a reputable shop? Be extra careful when purchasing online.
Check the packaging and labels - make sure the packaging and garment contain the manufacturer's name or registered trademark.
Check for product recalls
Check safety instructions - ensure the product is accompanied by safety information and instructions where applicable.
To minimise flammability, dressing-up costumes should be CE marked and made according to the British Retail Consortium's flammability requirements.
Fire Safety
The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service has published a list of Halloween safety tips:
When choosing or making a costume, avoid billowing or long trailing fabric and make sure it is flame retardant
Use a torch or battery candles in pumpkins rather than candles
If using real candles or any flame, place them out of way of trick-or-treaters, doorways and paths
Keep an eye on children at all times when around lit candles
Teach children how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire
Keep flowing items like fake hair and capes away from candle and other flames
If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see clearly
Keep overhanging decorations away from candles
Keep pets safely away from any lit flames
