Independent Group Delighted With Nominations

29th March 2012

Following the publication of the nominations for the Highland Council elections the Independent Group are delighted to see 54 individuals standing as independents. The present Independent Councillors have been working together and have produced a Charter of priorities and aims for the group in the next Council.

As an independent group we will support and encourage all those standing under the independent banner and look forward to as many as possible being elected on May the 3rd.

Highland Council is different from other local authorities as Independent Councillors have very much been to the fore over the last five years, leading strategic committees within the council, making policy and change which has helped the council achieve a balanced budget and save front line services.

Carolyn Wilson representing the group said "As independent councillors we are not constrained by the political parties and their policies, we are free to do what is best for our communities and the Highlands . The Highland Council faces many challenges going forward and we feel our group has not only the expertise but the common sense required to face the decisions which will have to be made. We are all local individuals who care passionately about our communities and the people we represent."

"We are aiming for an independent majority after May 3rd and look forward to achieving all the ambition we have for the Highlands"

Wick Councillor Bill Fernie and independent said,"Independent councillors have made a great impact over the five years of the administration and have worked hard to find ways of working initially with the SNP and later with the LidDems and Labour groups. As independent councillors we have remained firm in our resolution to get the best for our areas and the Highlands. We will continue to this course and still allow for individuals to make the case for their own areas unfettered by party dogma as has been a long tradition in northern representatives to councils"
