Trading Standards - Insulation Compensation Scams

Several homeowners who have had spray foam insulation installed have recently received cold calls or unsolicited letters offering legal services in connection with a claim relating to the removal of the insulation.

Some of those who had previously been contacted by a company offering to inspect and remove their spray foam insulation are now receiving calls and letters from a company called 'The Franco-British Lawyers Society'.

The letters say they could be eligible to receive compensation following the incorrect installation of the spray form insulation. In some cases the sender says they are representing the Scottish Government. They ask for an up-front fee of around £1,500 to provide a 'professional claim' for full refund.

Homeowners who have responded to these communications have then received emails asking them to fill out further details and pay a deposit to allow the compensation claim to proceed.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has warned that 'The Franco-British Lawyers Society' is falsely claiming to be a law firm and is misusing the contact details of a legitimate charitable organisation.

They advise that any business or transaction through 'The Franco-British Lawyers Society' or 'Compensation Pursuit', is not undertaken by a firm or solicitor authorised and regulated by the SRA.

There are also ongoing issues with cold callers who say they are working with trading standards or environmental health to inspect and remove spray foam insulation.
Trading Standards / Environmental Health services are not currently working with any spray foam removal companies in Scotland. Any communication suggesting otherwise is likely to be a scam.

How to Avoid
If you have had spray foam installed, do not respond to any communications from the company named above.

If you are in doubt about the legitimacy of a law firm or solicitor, you can contact the SRA to verify their identity at https://www.sra.org.uk/consumers/register/

If you feel you have been misled into having spray foam insulation installed, avoid responding to letters or cold callers offering to remove the insulation.
