Snow and ice is likely to bring further disruption, particularly across central and northern mainland Scotland on Tuesday. Scotrail passengers from Inverness heading to Thruso and Wick had the longest journey of their lives 2nd January lasting three nights and four days

Many rains cancelled on the North and Aberdeen lines from Inverness for another day.
A number of train passengers who left Inverness on Friday 2 January 2026 to go to Wick and Thurso on Friday got as far as Forsinard but had to tune back to Inverness. the passengers including this writer Bill Fernie had to stay in a series of hotels for three nights due to trains being cancelled due to ice and snow the journey from Inverness and finally back to Inverness too 13 hours. Scotrail agreed to pay for rooms taking one day at a time. So some were in three different hotels.
The long return finally ended at about 7.00pm on 5th January with bus supplied by Scotrail dropping passengers at Thurso and Wick.
