Gas Prices Are Rising Everywhere - The Data Explains Why Europe Suffers Most

Energy markets in 2026 are experiencing one of their sharpest shocks in recent years. While headlines often focus on surging gas prices in Europe—where wholesale prices have risen by as much as 80-100% in a matter of weeks. The reality is that this is a global disruption with highly uneven regional impacts. The variation is best understood through data on pricing, supply dependence, and household exposure.

At the global level, the primary catalyst has been disruption to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint responsible for roughly 20% of global oil trade and a significant share of liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. Brent crude prices have climbed above $100–$110 per barrel, while spot LNG prices in key markets have surged in tandem. However, the transmission of these price increases differs substantially across regions.

Europe remains the most exposed major market. Benchmark European gas prices (TTF) have spiked by approximately 90% within a month, driven by a combination of supply insecurity and low storage levels, which have hovered below 30% capacity in some periods.

The region now imports the majority of its gas in the form of LNG, making it highly sensitive to global spot prices. Competition with Asian buyers has intensified, with cargoes frequently diverted to higher-bidding markets. As a result, wholesale volatility feeds rapidly into retail energy costs. Typical UK household energy bills currently range between £1,500 and £2,500 annually, with gas-heavy heating systems amplifying exposure to price swings.

By contrast, the United States shows far greater price stability. Domestic natural gas prices remain near $3 per mmBtu. Significantly below European and Asian equivalents, which can be several multiples higher during periods of stress. Petrol prices in the U.S. have risen from roughly $3.00 to between $3.50 and $5.00 per gallon, equivalent to approximately £0.70–£1.05 per litre.

Even at the upper end, this is roughly half the price paid by consumers in the UK and much of Europe, where petrol prices typically range from £1.50 to £1.80 per litre. Annual household energy costs in the U.S. average between $1,200 and $2,000 (£950–£1,600), reflecting both lower input costs and greater supply security.

Asia represents the most competitive and, in some cases, the most strained market. LNG importers such as Japan and South Korea rely on external supply for nearly all of their natural gas consumption. Spot LNG prices in Asia often meet or exceed European benchmarks during supply shocks, as buyers compete aggressively to secure cargoes.

In emerging Asian economies, the situation is more complex: while some governments cushion consumers through subsidies, others face periodic shortages when high global prices limit purchasing power. This creates a dual dynamic of elevated prices and physical supply risk.

A comparison of retail fuel prices further illustrates global disparities. UK petrol prices averaging £1.50–£1.80 per litre contrast sharply with U.S. levels around £0.70–£1.05 per litre. In Asia, prices vary widely —from European- like levels in Japan to significantly lower, state-controlled prices in oil-producing nations. Meanwhile, import-dependent economies often experience both high costs and volatility.

The underlying driver of these differences is structural rather than temporary. Europe's reliance on imported LNG—combined with limited storage buffers—makes it uniquely sensitive to global supply shocks.

The United States benefits from domestic production that not only satisfies internal demand but also supports exports, effectively insulating its domestic market. Asia, lacking sufficient domestic resources, remains exposed to global competition, often acting as the marginal buyer that sets prices at the upper end of the market.

Ultimately, the data points to a clear conclusion: while the current surge in gas prices is global in origin, its impact is determined by energy independence, infrastructure, and market design. Europe faces the steepest and most immediate cost pressures, the United States remains relatively shielded, and Asia operates at the most competitive edge of global supply.

For policymakers and consumers alike, the lesson is not just about the scale of the shock, but about the structural vulnerabilities it reveals.
