"Will you walk a little faster?" said the tanker to the well,
"There's a market crash behind us, and the prices aren't so swell.
See how traders chase the futures, and the pipelines twist and groan?
They are waiting on production that we're struggling to own!".
"But I cannot go much quicker," said the weary patch of land,
"For you've drilled me down to nothing—haven't you already planned?
All my riches pulled and burned, and still you're asking for some more—
Yet you wonder why the climate's knocking loudly at your door!"
"Would you, could you, keep on pumping?" said the boardroom with a grin,
"We have profits to deliver and shareholders to win!
There are bonuses and targets, and a quarterly delight—
Never mind the warming oceans or the forests set alight!"
"But the storms are growing stronger," sighed the coastline to the sky,
"And the summers scorch the harvests till the fields are cracked and dry.
You have danced with blackened fuel for far too long a cheer—
Now the cost is coming due, and it's becoming rather clear."
"Shall we pivot? Shall we change?" asked a voice both faint and new,
“Wind and sun are waiting patiently—perhaps we try them too?”
But the Oilman only chuckled, “Such a costly, risky game—
We will stick to what we've always done, and hope it stays the same.”
So they drilled and burned and traded, as the warnings multiplied,
While the earth beneath them murmured, and the oceans slowly sighed.
And the question, still unanswered, echoes faintly through the fray:
Is the journey really worth it, if we cannot find a way?
