Warning To Retailers About UKCASH Scam

Police issue warning to public in Western Isles, Caithness and Sutherland regarding UKCASH scams.

Police in the Western Isles are advising shop/garage staff to be aware of a scam to defraud their paypoint facilities.

On 26 July 2012 a man called a business premises in the Western Isles claiming to be an engineer for Paypoint and that the premises required to update their machine over the phone.

He then successfully managed to get a member of staff to print off a number of UKASH vouchers from the paypoint terminal with the voucher codes then being passed to the fraudster.

This allowed the caller to successsfully access a four figure sum.

Anyone who received similar calls are urged to contact their local Police Station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Northern Constabulary would also like to make members of the public aware of cold calling telephone offers being made by people claiming to be a British Consul.

These offers appear very attractive and may "seem too good to be true."

The caller offers compensation over a PPI claim but requests that the tax on this compensation be paid in advance by way of UKASH vouchers. The balance of the compensation is never released leaving the victim out of pocket.
