Scotland has become one of Europe's leading areas for wind energy, with turbines now a familiar part of the landscape from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands.
But the next stage of the wind revolution may not simply be about building more wind farms.
It may be about rebuilding the ones Scotland already has.
The UK's largest onshore wind farm, Whitelee Windfarm near Glasgow, is due to undergo a major transformation. The existing turbines will eventually be replaced by fewer, taller and more powerful turbines, increasing electricity output while using the same general site.
From 215 turbines to around 124 bigger turbines
Whitelee currently has 215 turbines with a generating capacity of 539 megawatts (MW). It was originally commissioned in 2008 and expanded in later phases.
The repowering project announced by ScottishPower Renewables will replace the existing turbines in phases with around 124 much larger machines.
The aim is to increase generating capacity to around 1 gigawatt (1,000 MW) — almost doubling the electricity output from the site. The project is expected to take around a decade and represents an investment of about £1.5 billion creating hundreds of jobs.
Why rebuild instead of just build more?
At first glance, it may seem strange to remove working turbines.
However, wind turbine technology has changed dramatically in the last 15–20 years.
Modern turbines:
have much taller towers;
have longer blades;
generate more electricity from the same area;
can operate more efficiently in a wider range of conditions.
This means that replacing older turbines can produce much more electricity without needing to find completely new locations.
This process is known as repowering.
Why this matters for Scotland
Scotland has already developed many of its best wind farm locations.
Finding new sites can involve:
planning challenges;
environmental concerns;
grid connection issues;
local opposition.
Repowering existing sites may therefore become an increasingly important part of Scotland's energy future.
The Highland comparison
For people in Caithness and the wider Highlands, the Whitelee announcement is particularly relevant.
The north of Scotland has become a major renewable energy area, with:
onshore wind farms across Highland communities;
major offshore wind developments;
proposals for floating offshore wind;
increasing pressure on electricity grid connections.
The question many communities will eventually face is:
Will older wind farms be replaced with larger turbines, or will they simply reach the end of their working lives?
Whitelee suggests that repowering will become a much bigger issue.
Fewer turbines – but bigger structures
One interesting aspect of the Whitelee project is that the number of turbines will fall.
Some people may assume that fewer turbines means less renewable energy.
The opposite is expected.
The new turbines will be significantly larger, allowing the site to generate much more electricity.
However, this also raises questions about landscape impact.
A smaller number of turbines does not necessarily mean a smaller visual impact if each turbine is much taller.
The benefits for local communities
Wind farms can bring economic benefits through:
construction jobs;
maintenance work;
community benefit funds;
land rental income.
But communities across Scotland have also raised questions about whether the benefits are shared fairly, especially in areas where large amounts of renewable electricity are generated but local energy costs remain high.
That debate is particularly relevant in rural Scotland.
The bigger energy challenge
The growth of wind power has created another challenge — making sure the electricity system can cope.
Scotland can generate large amounts of renewable electricity when conditions are favourable, but the grid needs investment to move power to where it is needed and to manage periods when generation is lower.
The future energy system will therefore depend not just on turbines, but also on:
stronger transmission networks;
battery storage;
flexible demand;
possibly hydrogen production.
Whitelee already includes battery storage technology, showing how wind farms are becoming broader energy hubs rather than simply collections of turbines.
The question for the Highlands
The Whitelee project may be a glimpse of Scotland's next wind energy phase.
The first phase was about building wind farms.
The next phase may be about upgrading them.
For communities across Caithness and the Highlands, where wind energy has become a major part of the landscape, the debate will increasingly be:
How do we maximise the benefits of renewable energy while ensuring local communities see a fair return?
