A spectacular Harry Potter drone show may look like nothing more than entertainment, but behind the magic is a technology that could have a much darker application.
An advertisement for the Harry Potter DroneArt Show caught my attention because it promises something extraordinary: 1,200 drones moving in perfect harmony, creating images from the Harry Potter films in the night sky.
The shows are already being staged around Britain, with performances including events at Kempton Park and Haydock Park. The organisers describe the spectacle as a combination of drone technology, music and hundreds of aircraft moving together to create constantly changing images.
It is designed to entertain.
But it also demonstrates something that military planners around the world are increasingly interested in: large numbers of unmanned aircraft being coordinated as a single system.
From Harry Potter to the battlefield
The important point isn't that somebody could simply take the 1,200 entertainment drones and turn them into weapons.
That would be an oversimplification.
The interesting technology is the ability to coordinate large numbers of autonomous or semi-autonomous flying machines.
In the entertainment world, the drones are instructed to move to precise positions at precise times, avoid one another and change formation repeatedly.
Instead of creating a picture of Harry Potter, a military system could potentially give a group of drones completely different tasks.
Some could observe.
Others could search.
Others could act as communications relays or decoys.
And some could potentially be equipped for attack.
The important change is therefore not simply more drones.
It is the move from individual drones towards groups of drones operating together.
The UK is already experimenting with this
This isn't science fiction.
In June, British, American and Australian forces tested drone-swarming tactics on Salisbury Plain as part of the AUKUS programme.
The drones were programmed using relatively simple artificial intelligence to move into an area, divide up the search, identify potential targets and send imagery back to the user. Operators could assign areas of interest while the drones worked together.
The numbers used in that particular experiment were small compared with a 1,200-drone entertainment show.
But that isn't really the point.
The military is testing the concept.
Britain is also moving towards autonomous combat aircraft
The UK Government has announced Project NYX, which is intended to develop autonomous drones capable of operating alongside Army Apache helicopters.
The drones are intended to perform roles including reconnaissance, target acquisition, precision strikes and electronic warfare.
The current plan is for up to 24 autonomous armed drones to be operational by 2030, although Parliament has made clear that the programme remains at the concept and demonstration stage and that the eventual fleet size has not yet been decided.
That is particularly significant because it shows the direction in which military thinking is moving.
The future battlefield may not consist simply of a pilot flying a drone while an operator sits somewhere else controlling it.
Instead, a human could increasingly give the system a mission while autonomous aircraft carry out parts of that mission themselves.
Why would a swarm be so difficult to stop?
This is where the concept becomes genuinely worrying.
A conventional air defence system is designed to detect and destroy individual threats.
But imagine facing hundreds of relatively inexpensive drones arriving together.
Destroying one does not necessarily stop the others.
And the attacker does not necessarily need every drone to reach its objective.
That creates a fundamental economic problem for defenders.
If a relatively cheap drone can force an opponent to use an expensive missile or other defensive weapon, the attacker may be able to exhaust the defender's ammunition far more quickly than the defender can replenish it.
This is one reason why the development of counter-drone technology is accelerating alongside drone technology.
At this year's Farnborough Airshow, for example, Lockheed Martin presented a high-power microwave system designed to counter groups of drones, illustrating the growing importance of defending against mass drone attacks.
Ukraine has already demonstrated the importance of drones
The war in Ukraine has accelerated this technological change dramatically.
Drones have become an integral part of reconnaissance, surveillance, artillery targeting and attacks.
The next stage is potentially more
Instead of having large numbers of drones that each require considerable human control, militaries are increasingly interested in systems where software manages groups of machines.
That could make the number of drones deployed during a conflict potentially much larger.
It could also make warfare much faster.
A human operator may not have the time to make every decision when hundreds of aircraft are moving simultaneously.
That is where artificial intelligence and autonomous decision-making enter the picture.
And that raises a much bigger question
There is a fundamental difference between a Harry Potter drone show and a military swarm.
The entertainment drones are following carefully programmed flight paths in a controlled environment.
A battlefield is chaotic.
There may be buildings, mountains, weather, electronic interference, enemy air defences and other aircraft.
Communication systems can be jammed or disrupted.
So the technology demonstrated by a drone light show should not be mistaken for proof that a military can simply launch 1,200 drones and have them behave perfectly.
But the basic principle is becoming increasingly achievable.
And that is what makes the advertisement so interesting.
The extraordinary thing is how quickly the technology is moving
Only a few years ago, the idea of hundreds of small aircraft operating together sounded like something from a science-fiction film.
Today, we can watch 1,200 drones create a moving Harry Potter display above a racecourse.
At the same time, governments are spending increasing amounts of money developing autonomous military aircraft and experimenting with swarming.
The technology is moving from entertainment into defence.
And it may eventually move much further.
The future battlefield could look very different
The traditional image of warfare involves tanks, aircraft, warships and soldiers.
The battlefield of the future may still contain all of those things.
But surrounding them could be thousands of small, relatively inexpensive autonomous machines.
Some might be watching.
Some might be communicating.
Some might be attempting to confuse the enemy.
Others might be attacking.
And potentially, they could all be working together.
That changes the economics of warfare as much as the technology.
A country might be able to produce thousands of relatively cheap drones rather than relying exclusively on a smaller number of extremely expensive aircraft and missiles.
The side that can manufacture them fastest, programme them most effectively and defend against the enemy's drones may gain a significant advantage.
From magic in the sky to military reality
Perhaps that is why the Harry Potter advertisement caught my attention.
There is something almost magical about watching 1,200 individual machines turn into a recognisable picture in the night sky.
But underneath that spectacle is a very modern technological achievement.
Thousands of machines can now be coordinated to behave as one system.
For a family watching the Harry Potter show, that is entertainment.
For military planners, it is potentially a glimpse of the future.
And perhaps the most unsettling part is that the technology doesn't have to become dramatically more sophisticated before its military implications become much greater.
The question is no longer whether drones can work together.
The question is how many can be made to work together — and how intelligently they can operate without a human controlling each one.
The Harry Potter show may be designed to create magic.
But the technology behind it could be helping to create an entirely new form of warfare.
