So should households and businesses be worried?

The short answer is yes – but not for the reasons many of the headlines suggest.

The report, prepared by energy consultancy Cornwall Insight for NESO, examines the growing challenge of balancing Britain's electricity network as more power comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

This can appear illogical to consumers.

In reality, it highlights that Britain needs more investment in its electricity transmission network as well as more renewable generation.

The challenge is increasingly one of infrastructure rather than simply producing enough electricity.

So are the headlines exaggerated?

It looks like many of them are.

Some newspapers have implied that Britain is on the verge of regular power cuts.

That is not what the available evidence suggests.

The electricity system still has several layers of protection, including:

reserve generation;
battery storage;
interconnectors;
demand management;
emergency balancing services.

These systems were designed precisely to deal with unexpected events, and the June incident demonstrated that they can still prevent a local problem becoming a national blackout.

But the report should not be ignored

That does not mean everything is fine.

The leaked report raises important questions about:

forecasting electricity demand;
monitoring millions of small generators;
maintaining grid stability;

ensuring the electricity system keeps pace with the energy transition.

These are genuine engineering challenges.

The good news is that engineers understand those challenges.
