A major renewable energy boost is coming to Caithness as TagEnergy secures approval for the Cairnmore Hill Wind Farm, located just west of Thurso. The five‑turbine project will deliver 21.5 MW of clean electricity—enough to power around 28,000 homes—and marks one of the company’s first operational wind ventures in the UK.
Originally proposed by RES and repeatedly scaled down due to landscape concerns, the redesigned scheme won approval following a successful appeal to the Scottish Government. TagEnergy’s acquisition and refinement of the project form part of a wider strategy to accelerate onshore wind deployment across Scotland.
The development is expected to bring £1.4 million in local investment and generate £8.75 million in business rates for Highland Council over its 35‑year lifespan. Community benefit packages are also planned, ensuring neighbouring areas share in the long‑term value of the project.
With Scotland pushing toward net‑zero targets, Cairnmore Hill represents a significant step in expanding affordable, homegrown renewable energy in the far north.
TagEnergy has another project in Ayrshire and is adding to existing portfolio of renewable and storage projects across the UK, France, Germany, Japan and Australia.
