Plug-In Solar Is Coming: Could Britain's New Supermarket Solar Revolution Work in Caithness?

For years, solar panels have been something many people associated with large roofs, expensive installations and thousands of pounds of upfront cost.

That is about to change as from 27 August, new rules will allow compliant plug-in solar systems to be connected to household sockets in Great Britain. The Government has been working with major retailers including Lidl, B&Q, Currys, Amazon, Asda, Screwfix and Wickes to bring the technology into the mainstream.

But there is an important distinction between becoming legal and appearing on supermarket shelves.

The law changes on 27 August. Retailers have not, however, all confirmed exactly when their products will arrive, what they will cost or which systems they will stock. Lidl has been one of the names most closely associated with the idea, but it has not yet announced a firm UK launch date.

That means consumers should not rush out expecting to find a £400 solar kit in every supermarket next Thursday.

But the bigger change is nevertheless coming.

Solar you can plug into the wall amd the principle is remarkably simple.

Instead of installing a conventional solar system on the roof, a household could have one or more panels mounted in a suitable position outside, connected to a micro-inverter and then connected to the home's electrical system through an appropriate socket.

The electricity generated is used by appliances in the home, reducing the amount of electricity that has to be bought from the grid.

The systems being developed for the British market are limited to 800 watts of AC output and must meet specific safety requirements.

That is nowhere near enough to power an entire house. But that isn't really the point.

If a refrigerator, freezer, television, computer, router or other appliances are using electricity during the day, solar generation can reduce the amount of electricity being drawn from the grid at that moment.

It is a small-scale way of making some of your own electricity.

The price could be the really interesting part

Traditional rooftop solar remains a significant investment.

Plug-in solar is intended to bring the entry price dramatically lower, with figures around £350 to £400 being discussed for basic systems.

That is obviously much more accessible than spending several thousand pounds on a conventional installation.

But consumers should be careful about the claims being made.

A £400 system will not suddenly make a household's electricity bill disappear.

The maximum output is limited, the panels only generate when there is sufficient daylight, and the biggest savings come when the electricity is being generated at the same time that the household is using electricity.

Recent estimates suggest annual savings could be somewhere around £70 to £110, depending heavily on the property and how much of the generated electricity is actually used.

That means a purchase costing £400 might take several years to recover through electricity savings.

It is not a get-rich-quick scheme.

It is potentially a relatively inexpensive way of reducing electricity purchases over a number of years.

And then there is Caithness

This is where things become particularly interesting for households in the far north.

There is sometimes an assumption that solar power is primarily a southern phenomenon.

Look at a map of Britain and it is easy to imagine that somewhere as far north as Caithness must be a poor place for solar.

But solar panels don't need hot weather.

They need light.

The bigger question for a Caithness household is therefore not simply how far north the house is, but where the panels can be positioned and how much unobstructed daylight they receive.

A south-facing wall, roof or other suitable location could be considerably more useful than a shaded position.

The winter is inevitably a different matter. Shorter days and lower levels of sunlight mean considerably less generation than during the long days of June.

That is something anyone considering plug-in solar in Caithness needs to understand.

The timing could be particularly interesting

The introduction of plug-in solar comes at a time when household energy costs remain a major concern.

For many people, the attraction isn't really about becoming an environmental campaigner.

It is much simpler:

Can I reduce the amount of electricity I have to buy?

That is a very different proposition.

If a household can spend a few hundred pounds and gradually reduce its electricity purchases over several years, some people will see that as worthwhile.

For renters and people who cannot justify, or cannot afford, a full rooftop installation, the attraction could be even greater.

But don't buy just anything

This is probably the most important warning for consumers.

The fact that plug-in solar becomes legal on 27 August does not mean that every solar kit advertised online is suddenly safe or legal to connect to a UK socket.

The new rules apply to equipment meeting the specified requirements.

The Government's interim specification includes an 800VA maximum inverter output, and the equipment must meet other requirements concerning the plug, fuse and connection.

There is also a very important practical rule: don't improvise with extension leads or adaptors.

A solar system feeding electricity into a domestic electrical installation is fundamentally different from plugging in a television or kettle.

Consumers should therefore look for a complete, compliant UK product rather than buying miscellaneous components from an overseas website and attempting to assemble their own system.

The safety concerns are one reason the Government has introduced a specific specification rather than simply declaring all plug-in solar equipment acceptable.

So could the famous Lidl middle aisle soon contain solar panels?

Possibly.

That is one of the reasons this story has captured so much attention.

Lidl has already sold balcony-style solar systems in parts of Europe, and the supermarket was named by the Government as one of the retailers working on bringing plug-in solar to Britain.

But, as things stand today, Lidl has not confirmed that a particular product will be available in its British stores on 27 August.

So if you see headlines saying that every Lidl will have solar panels next Thursday, treat them cautiously.

The legal door opens next week.

The products may take a little longer to walk through it.

What could this mean for ordinary households?

Perhaps the most interesting thing about plug-in solar is not the amount of electricity an individual panel produces.

It is the possibility that solar generation could gradually become an ordinary consumer product.

We are accustomed to buying batteries, light bulbs, televisions and electrical appliances from supermarkets.

If solar panels eventually become another household purchase, the psychological change could be considerable.

Solar would no longer necessarily mean calling a specialist company, obtaining quotations and finding several thousand pounds.

It could mean buying a small system for a few hundred pounds and making a modest contribution to your own electricity supply.

That doesn't replace conventional solar.

It simply opens another door.

And for Caithness, there is a question worth asking

Will plug-in solar work as well in Caithness as it does in southern England?

Probably not in terms of annual output.

But that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be worthwhile.

A well-positioned panel can still generate electricity in northern Scotland, and the long daylight hours of spring and summer can provide substantial opportunities for generation.

The real test will be what happens when the systems actually reach households.

How much electricity will they produce?

How much will Caithness households save?

Will the savings justify the purchase price?

And will the systems prove useful during the darker months when households arguably need electricity most?

Those are questions that cannot really be answered by national averages.

They need to be answered by experience.

Britain's little solar experiment

That may be the most interesting way of looking at what is about to happen.

The arrival of plug-in solar isn't going to transform Britain's electricity system overnight.

An 800-watt system isn't going to make a house energy independent.

But thousands of households generating a small amount of their own electricity could collectively become something more significant.

And if the products are cheap enough, simple enough and safe enough, they could bring solar power to people who previously thought it was something only homeowners with large roofs and substantial savings could afford.

For Caithness households, the question is perhaps particularly simple.

When the first compliant plug-in solar systems eventually appear in the shops, could one of them make sense on your house, shed, garage or outbuilding?

We won't know the answer until we see the actual products, prices and performance.

But from 27 August, Britain will at least be able to start finding out.

And perhaps that is the real significance of the change.

The solar panel may soon stop being something you have installed and become something you simply buy.
