War Memorial Refurbishment Programme
20th September 2012
The Highland Council is to embark on a programme of repair works to war memorials in the Highlands ahead of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 in 2014.
The majority of the Council's 165 memorials have been inspected to assess the level of work required to bring them up to a good standard.
Whilst most are in a good condition, 47 require repair, including structural repairs, re-pointing, repainting and re-lettering.
In Caithness the war memorials to be repaired are mainly in Landward Caithness ward with Thurso one at St john's Square being the only other in need of attention.
Some memorials are listed structures and will require approval from Historic Scotland before any specialist work can be undertaken.
