Scottish Health Survey 2011
24th September 2012
Commenting on the publication of the Scottish Health Survey 2011, Public Health Minister Michael Matheson said: "These findings show that Scotland's health is improving, from an increase in physical activity levels for girls to a large decline in adult smokers.
"It is particularly encouraging to see such a fall in the number of smokers as giving up smoking is one of the best things that anyone can do to protect their health. I also welcome a drop in alcohol consumption. Our Alcohol Framework outlines a package of over 40 measures to reduce alcohol related harm, and we have backed up its implementation with a record investment of £196 million to tackle alcohol misuse since 2008 - the bulk being invested in prevention, treatment and support services.
"We want to see Scotland become a healthier, fitter and more active nation. We are already working hard so that everyone across Scotland can enjoy sport and get active. The Scottish Government will deliver 150 Community Sports Hubs across 30 local authorities, and has been investing in opportunities for young people to become more physically active in and around Scotland's schools.
"Work is being done across Government to tackle the issues that cause obesity and weight problems. We have an Action Plan to help people make healthy choices and support families who are struggling with their weight, while we are collaborating with both small and large businesses across the food industry to make affordable, healthier food options more readily available.
"Today's Scottish Health Survey shows the importance of our ongoing actions to improve Scotland's health as a nation and to reduce the number of people living with multiple health problems. This, combined with actions plans to tackle heart disease, stroke care and diabetes, will help improve public health and reduce the number of Scots dying from preventable conditions."
"We are seeing improvement in many areas; however it's important that work continues across the public sector to ensure that these trends continue in the right direction."
