Masters of Teaching

7th November 2012

More Scottish teachers will be able to benefit from Masters level study, Minister for Learning Alasdair Allan announced today.

Responding to the National Partnership Group report, Dr Allan confirmed £3 million Scottish Government funding over the next three years to support higher quality learning for teachers.

Dr Allan said:“International comparisons show the positive impact that a masters level qualification can have on education. That’s why we will give the same opportunities to teachers in Scotland, building on the extremely high standards that already exist.

“We are providing £3 million to enable more teachers to learn at Masters level. Amongst the first group of teachers to benefit will be those who were on the Chartered Teacher programme, with £1 million funding allowing them to finish the learning they have already undertaken.

“A new National Implementation Board is being set up with an independent Chair, Professor Petra Wend, to ensure that we build momentum in delivering the change. I also expect local authorities and universities to work together to enhance teacher education. I thank the National Partnership Group for their report, which I accept, it is now time to pick up the pace in delivering improved education for teachers and better outcomes for our young people.”

Professor Wend Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen Margaret University said:“I am delighted to accept the role as Chair of the National Implementation Board and am looking forward to ensuring the positive changes envisaged by Professor Donaldson and the National Partnership Group are now implemented.”
