The role of further education in delivering Opportunities for All, the Scottish Government’s unique guarantee for 16-19 year olds, has also been highlighted.
Mr Russell said:“Our colleges occupy a key role in supporting the economy. They deliver the key skills businesses need, and in doing so they boost the employment prospects of learners. We have maintained teaching levels and full time equivalent numbers for next year, so our commitment to the sector is absolutely clear.
“We are investing an additional £80 million to boost the employment prospects of 23,000 young people and our colleges, who are now focused on courses of economic value have a pivotal role in this work.
“Through this funding, we are the first and only Scottish Government to guarantee a place in training or education for all 16-19 year olds. Much of this work will take place in a further education setting and my message to Scotland’s young people is that the doors of colleges remain open to you.”
