Severe Weather Warning for Highlands and Islands - Be Prepared

HISCG members warn public to prepare for severe weather - Highlands and Islands.

Multi-agency partners are advising people to prepare themselves for the impact of a spell of cold weather over the next couple of days.

More snow is expected over higher ground, where 5-10cm is possible above 200m.

At lower levels temperatures are expected to drop and there will also be an increased risk of ice where sleet and rain fall on ready frozen surfaces.

Wintry showers will continue for later Thursday. These conditions are expected to continue over the weekend with overnight frost and some wintery showers. An amber warning has been issued for areas most likely to see this weather and a yellow warning that covers the remainder of Scotland.

Allow extra time for your journey. It is advised that before you set out you should check your vehicle is adequately maintained and that breaks, tyres, lights, batteries, windscreens and wiper blades are in good condition. We also recommend that your vehicle has a winter emergency kit that may include; a torch, shovel, food, a blanket, warm clothing, a first aid kit and wellies/boots.

The snow will follow a a prolonged period of low temperatures and all road users should take care and be aware of the risks associated with ice and untreated surfaces.
