Graduate Placement Scheme 2013-14 For Gaelic Launched

Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) has launched the 2013/14 Graduate Placement Scheme with funding available to assist four year-long placements. CnaG now wishes to hear from any Gaelic-speaking graduates who wish to apply for this year’s scheme. CnaG also wants to hear from organisations companies, where Gaelic is the language of the workplace, which may have an interest in providing a year-long placement for a graduate.
The Scheme, which is funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, allows talented young Gaels take a first step into the workplace, providing them with a year-long placement, enabling them to access a wide range of Gaelic-related career opportunities and to work in a Gaelic environment. The Scheme provides the graduates with a minimum salary of £17k and they also have the opportunity to attend a 5-day residential personal development course which will be greatly beneficial to them and which will also enhance their CV. The scheme also greatly benefits the employers in that they get talented young people full of confidence and enthusiasm, with specific skills enabling their companies and organizations to expand their range of work and services.
Donald MacNèill, Ceannard of CnaG, said, “This scheme is important in that it creates employment opportunities for Gaelic-speaking graduates across a wide range of businesses and industries. It is vital there are work opportunities for Gaelic-speakers across all businesses and industries and also across Scotland. This not only provides these businesses with confident young people with a high level of specific skills it also reinforces and strengthens the Gaelic ethos within the business. We are grateful to Bòrd na Gàidhlig for enabling us to run the scheme.”

Graduates are paid a minimum of £17,000 for the year, with CnaG reimbursing the participating organisations £6,800. They also have the opportunity to attend a week long residential personal development course whilst on placement.
Comunn na Gàidhlig was established in 1984 to co-ordinate the development of Gaelic, and is a charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. Today it focuses on the delivery of two service contracts for aspects of Gaelic development, for Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
This is carried out through working with communities, companies and at a political level. CnaG has offices in Inverness, Stornoway and Glasgow and additional staff based in Uist, Skye, Islay, Edinburgh and Lochaber.
