Thurso welcomes funding boost for The North

29th January 2015

Local MP, John Thurso, today welcomed the announcement that communities in the North are set to benefit from the latest round of awards from the UK government's Coastal Communities Fund (CCF).
The Coastal Communities Fund is financed by the government through the allocation of funding equivalent to 50% of the revenues from the Crown Estate's marine activities in that area. 27 towns and villages across Scotland are set to benefit as part of the £9.58 million third funding round of the CCF. There are 3 projects in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross set to receive a total of over £300,000 in funding.

Thurso Harbour is set to see an investment of £73,360 to create a Harbour centre, Dornoch CIC will receive £99,820 to promote tourism in the area while The Scottish Wildlife Trust will get £127,447 for a 1 year project based in Lochinver which aims to address the lack of employment and training in this remote area by supporting a tree nursery social enterprise creating sustainable jobs.

Commenting John Thurso said:"These are all very worthy projects which will help encourage jobs and growth in the North, I am sure that this money will be a great help to them and wish to congratulate all those involved in the projects.
"In government, the Liberal Democrats started the process of giving power back to coastal communities with the CCF. We pushed on the Smith Commission to finish the job with control over the Crown Estate set to come to Scotland".
