Jamie Stone Lib Dems Candidate for Caithness, Sutherland & Ross and the Highlands and Islands regional list.

Candidate Statement.

From Tain, Jamie was first elected as a councillor in 1986 and in 1999 he was elected to be the Lib Dem MSP for Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross in the Scottish Parliament, a position Jamie held at the two subsequent elections.

After taking a break from politics in 2011, to look after family matters, he was re-elected to the council in 2012.

Jamie is well-known in the Highlands - through his work, past and present - and through regular newspaper columns.

Making use of his knowledge and past experience, Jamie is working to protect the public services that affect peoples' lives. With a proven track record of delivery both as councillor and a MSP, Jamie is delighted to have the opportunity to go back to work again for the people of the Highlands after the Scottish Parliament Elections.

Jamie says: As the Highland Liberal Democrat prospective candidate for Caithness, Sutherland & Ross I am contacting every home in the constituency to ask you for your personal support in the forthcoming Scottish Parliament election.

Many of you already know me from my work as a Highland councillor and from my time as the MSP for Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross. Between 1999 and 2011 I fought and won three elections to Holyrood; the last with an increased majority and share of the vote.

After taking a break from politics in 2011 in order to attend to family matters, in 2012 I was re-elected to Highland Council and I have been asked to once again put myself forward for the Scottish Parliament.

In asking for your support I offer you my experience and commitment to our area.

Issues taken up and championed - safeguarding the Far North maternity service, a new high school for Wick, improvements to the A9 from Helmsdale to the Ord of Caithness, and a new Tain Health Centre - are there as a matter of record.

But there is much work still to be done.

Health, housing, education, transport, employment - delivering all the services that impact on our lives - present real challenges in the Highlands. Additional costs, distance, geography and severe winter conditions have to be factored in - and it is the job of a Highland MSP to make sure that the Scottish Government takes proper account of this at all times.

For this reason elected representatives of the Highlands must put our area first. This is the acid test - will the representative always do this - no matter how difficult or unpopular this might be in Holyrood? I believe that my past record speaks for itself. You know me - and with your help and support in the Scottish Parliament election I can again go to work for you.

Over the next months I shall personally visit as many homes in Caithness, Sutherland & Ross as I am able to. It will be a pleasure to get out and about in such a special part of the Highlands and I very much look forward to meeting you.
