Somerfield raises a Macmillion for Cancer Services

21st December 2007

Macmillan Cancer Support would like to thank the people of Scotland for helping raise £1million for people affected by cancer.

The "Macmillion" was raised by the dedicated staff and customers of Somerfield stores across the UK ? with a fantastic £117,161 raised in Scotland. The Caithness stores contributed and Thurso raised £2713 and Wick £1074.

Elspeth Atkinson, chief executive of Macmillan in Scotland, said: "We are extremely grateful to Somerfield staff and customers for their tremendous support over the year. The money raised will make a real difference to the lives of local people living with cancer."

The "Macmillion" was raised over the past 12-months, after Somerfield staff voted for Macmillan Cancer Support to be their charity partner in 2007-2008.

Somerfield employees across Scotland threw themselves into fundraising for Macmillan, getting involved with Macmillan events including the World's Biggest Coffee Morning and the Big Picnic. Somerfield staff also put on their own fundraising events including karaokes and fancy dress days.

A spokesman for Somerfield said: "We have all had a fantastic time raising money to fund important services in the community, and there is definitely some undiscovered talent in our stores! More importantly though, we have managed to raise a lot of money for a good cause ? and we have enjoyed ourselves doing it!"

All of the money raised will help Macmillan provide medical, practical, emotional and financial support to people affected by cancer in Scotland.
