Council's Garden Waste Service restarts

The Highland Council is reminding householders who have purchased a Garden Waste Permit that the collections restart the week beginning Monday 26th February 2018. Permit holders are also being urged to check carefully for any contamination that may have got into their bins while they have been sitting unused.
Brown garden waste bins should only contain the following materials: grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, twigs or small branches, flowers, weeds, leaves and prunings. Contamination is anything that is not these recommended materials and includes: bags and plastic, stones, rubble, turf, general waste, food waste, animal waste, Japanese Knotweed, and Ragwort.
Councillor Allan Henderson, Chair of the Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee, said: "Winter storage does mean that there may be material in the bin that cannot be accepted, so please check your bins thoroughly and make sure your garden waste isn't contaminated."
The quality of the garden waste is important to the Council, as there are legal requirements to ensure that garden waste can be composted and used again as a soil conditioner. This greatly helps the processors to achieve the legal standard for compostable material.
Councillor Henderson added: "The Council thanks all its Garden Waste Service customers for maintaining the good quality of material collected from brown bins. It plays a significant part in the Highlands over-all recycling rates, and contributes to diverting waste from landfill."
Permit holders are advised to check the bin calendars which are available online at www.highland.gov.uk to check when their next brown bin collection date is.
