Why China?

Chinese visitors to Scotland

The number of Chinese visitors flocking to Scotland has soared by almost 200 per cent in the space of a decade.

China is the world’s most valuable source market for international tourism. There has been rapid growth towards European destinations and the Highlands & Islands are in a strong position to start looking at how China can boost its economy as part of its visitor economy strategy.

Edinburgh is already seeing the benefits. It is now the second most visited destination in the UK. The number of Chinese visitors to Edinburgh rose by 40 per cent in 2017, with Edinburgh Castle recording around 180,000 visitors of Chinese origin in the same period. Businesses on the High Street have already taken to displaying signs written in Mandarin and many are looking for staff fluent in the language. Popular visitor attraction, The Real Mary King’s Close, recently introduced a Mandarin audio guide.

In June last year, the first-ever direct flight from China (Beijing) to Scotland (Edinburgh) was scheduled and it now runs all year round - make sure 2019 is the year your business welcomes Chinese visitors!

This workshop is delivered in partnership with Scottish Development International (SDI) with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
