Augmented Reality App HighlandAR Legends Launched To Chinese Tourist Market At Chinese New Year
5th February 2019
Happy New Year to Chinese visitors to the Highlands! The HighlandAR app of an augmented reality trail, marking local legends in Inverness, has been translated into Mandarin Chinese.
The app, which brings local legends to life through a series of plaques installed at various locations across Inverness, was launched in the autumn of 2018. The app has now been downloaded around 1500 times by tourists from across the world visiting the Highlands.
The Chinese version of the app was developed with funding from the Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal and will enable Chinese speaking visitors to delight in the unique augmented reality trail.
The artwork on the plaques acts as a trigger for the HighlandAR Legends app which uses augmented reality to bring a story to life in 3D in your surroundings.
The augmented reality trail includes plaques at the Victorian Market, the Steeple, the Castle, Ness Walk, Huntly Street, Falcon Square and Eden Court.
This app "HighlandAR Legends" is part of a Council project under the City-Region Deal. Communications and Resilience Manager Ruth Cleland who is leading the project said: "HighlandAR Legends is a global, mobile app using augmented reality to bring the legends and history of Inverness to life. The artworks and the app will provide a rich new experience for visitors to Inverness and also brings wider economic benefits and income generation opportunities to the Council."
Monica Lee-Macpherson MBE, Chairperson of the Scottish Highlands & Islands and Moray Chinese Association (SHIMCA) said: “Chinese people really like technology and so they will find this app really useful. It is really interesting and a great way of showing local legends.”
Provost of Inverness, Helen Carmichael said: “The number of Chinese tourists coming to Scotland has trebled in recent years. This new Mandarin version will hopefully help to attract Chinese tourists to the Highlands to experience the legends of Inverness and go on to explore the wonderful scenery, heritage and culture that the Highlands has to offer.
“The HighlandAR Legends app is a wonderful and exciting new way of telling the stories and legends of our city which is rich in culture and history. It is a tremendous way of attracting international visitors and helping to boost the tourism economy in the Highlands.”
The app HighlandAR Legends and the Mandarin Chinese version can be downloaded from both Google Play and Apple App Stores.
