Banking Reforms Could Make The UK A Sustainable Finance Hub, But Also Threaten Financial Stability

The UK government wants to rewrite the rules designed to keep the country's banks and financial institutions stable - again.  The so-called Edinburgh reforms announced recently by UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt will "unlock investment and turbocharge growth in towns and cities across the UK", he says.

New Ev Charging Points At Inverness Campus - Free No More But Still Low Cost Charging

HIE is increasing the number of charging points at Inverness Campus from two to six; each of which can charge two vehicles simultaneously.   The agency is also planning to install a charger at its office in Benbecula, adding to its EV charging points at Inverness Campus and Enterprise Park Forres.

£1.9m Investment Approved By HIE In Argyll And Islands Over Six Months

Between 1 April and 30 September, Arran Aromatics was awarded up to £80,226 for the development of a new filling line.  More than £38,000 was approved for the development of a new remote restaurant at Ballygown on Mull, and Bute Island Foods was awarded more than £43,000 for training support.

Moray Maternity Services - Return To Consultant-led Care At Dr Gray's Hospital But Not Until 2026

Health Secretary Humza Yousaf has welcomed the plan to return of consultant-led obstetric care to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.   The draft plan approved for submission at NHS Grampian's Board meeting last week and reflects the commitment to enhance maternity services in the North of Scotland.

Lowest Priced Food Items Rising At The Fastest Rate

Retailers are hiking up the cost of their cheapest food items as the cost of living crisis bites the UK.   Supermarkets are increasing the price of their value items more quickly than more expensive items, according to an analysis by price intelligence company Skuuudle.

As More Rail Strikes Loom - Customers Reminded To Check Their Journey Before Travel Over Christmas

ScotRail customers are being reminded to plan their journey in advance over the Christmas period as services will be severely impacted by the latest round of strike action by RMT members of Network Rail.   The dispute does not involve ScotRail staff, however, it will have a major impact on the train operator's ability to provide services as the RMT planned action involves Network Rail staff in Scotland.

Sharpest Fall In Inflation In 16 Months Will Be Of More Comfort To Policy Makers Than Families

Annual CPI inflation fell to 10.7 per cent in November - down from 11.1 per cent in October – its biggest fall since July 2021.  But this fall will be of more comfort to policy makers than families, with price rises still massively outpacing pay rises, the Resolution Foundation said.

Population Estimates For The UK, England, Wales, Scotland And Northern Ireland: Mid-2021

The UK population at mid-year 2021 was estimated to be 67.0 million, an increase of 3.7 million (5.9%) on the population in mid-2011.   Over the 10 years between 2011 and 2021, the population of England increased by 6.5% to an estimated 56,536,000, the highest rate of the four countries of the UK; the estimated population of Northern Ireland increased by 5.0% to 1,905,000, Scotland by 3.4% to 5,480,000, and Wales by 1.4% to an estimated 3,105,000.

Institute of Hospitality announces John Thurso as its new President

The IoH will welcome Viscount Thurso or John Thurso as he is also known, to the role from 1 January 2023.   The news follows last week's announcement that the IoH's current President Surinder Arora, chairman and founder of the Arora Hotel Group is retiring on 31 December after three years in the position.

Your Police, You Decide Funding Allocated To Caithness Groups

Caithness Voluntary Group (CVG) and Police Scotland worked together giving local people a say over how to spend £32,000 in the Caithness area.   The project, called Your Police, You Decide, has been funded by the Scottish Government and aims to improve local democracy, ensuring that communities are more engaged with decision-making to improve safety and wellbeing.

RCN Scotland Planning For Strike Action In The Nhs Continues After Members In Scotland Rejected A Revised NHS Pay Offer

An overwhelming 82% of members who voted rejected the offer in the consultative ballot which closed at midday on Monday.   Commenting on the result, Julie Lamberth, RCN Scotland Board Chair, said "It was the right thing to ask our members whether to accept or reject this offer.

Highland Council In Joint Venture For EV Charging

A collection of public authorities in Scotland are seeking engagement with the private sector over the potential of establishing a joint venture or consortium to deliver electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the region.   Highland Council, Aberdeenshire Council and Aberdeen City Council intend to enter a joint venture arrangement or consortium opportunity with an investment and delivery partner(s) to bring forward the provision of EV Charging Infrastructure across the region but also to realise the commercial opportunity that this approach could provide to the Council partners.

Monthly Minimum Wage Rises By 55% For 2023 In Turkey Doubling in one year

Turkey's monthly minimum wage will be 8,506.80 lira ($455) in 2023, announced today Thursday 22 December 22022, marking a 55% increase from the level in July.   This doubles the rate from January.

November Borrowing Highest On Record In UK Public Sector

In November 2022, the public sector spent more than it received in taxes and other income, requiring it to borrow (public sector net borrowing excluding public sector banks (PSNB ex)) £22.0 billion, which was £13.9 billion more than in November 2021, and the highest November borrowing since monthly records began in 1993.   Public sector total expenditure was £98.9 billion in November 2022; of this, central government current (or day-to-day) spending was £82.0 billion, £13.5 billion more than in November 2021.
