Pay Claim Submitted For Amazon Workers

Union approaches Amazon for talks after wave of protest action across the country GMB has submitted a formal pay claim to the company, asking for a real terms rise.   In the letters submitted on behalf of members across the country, GMB is asking for talks on pay - facilitated by the government arbitration service ACAS.

Rail Strikes in UK in August

Unions have planned strikes for various dates.   Saturday 13 August Thursday 18 August Saturday 20 August The 13 August strike is organised by Aslef and includes train drivers at nine rail companies.

Royal Mail Staff Strike Dates

Royal Mail Staff will strike over a four day period and walkouts will take place.   The union said management response with a 2% pay rise, which it claims would lead to a dramatic reduction in worker living standards due to soaring inflation.

DHL The Delivery company workers to strike

For one week from Saturday 13 to Saturday 20 August, DHL workers based in Scotland will go on strike in a move that their union, Unite, says will impact supplies to Sainsbury's stores across Scotland and Northern Ireland.   Unite said the strike was to protest the fact that DHL were offering lower wages to workers based in Scotland, unlike in other parts of the UK..

Action Needed To Address Cost Of Living Crisis

The First Minister has sought an emergency meeting of the Prime Minister and Heads of devolved Government Council to agree steps to help people in need as a result of the cost of living crisis.   In a letter to the Prime Minister urging the suggested September meeting be brought forward due to a "fast deteriorating" situation the First Minister made her view clear that “many people across the UK simply cannot afford to wait until September for further action to be taken”.

Bus strike by Unite

On Friday 19 and Saturday 20 August more than 1,600 London bus workers in west London will stage strike action in protest of the pay offer they have received.   The first day of the strike action will coincide with the strikes planned for the London Underground and Overground, bringing public transport to a grinding halt in the capital that Friday..

Results Day - Near Record Pass Rates For National 5s, Highers And Advanced Highers

Pass rates for National 5s, Highers and Advanced Highers have increased to near record levels for any exam year since current qualifications were introduced.   The overall percentage of A grades is also higher than 2019, when exams were last held, and the number of skills-based qualifications, awards and certificates has increased to a near record 64,240.

Felixstowe Port Strike For Eight Days Will Create Shortages in Stores

Over 1,900 workers at the UK's largest container port in Felixstowe will stage strike action over pay for eight days from Sunday 21 to Monday 29 August.   The strike, which is being organised by Unite, is expected to cause huge disruption to the supply of goods including packaged food, electronics and clothing across the UK..

University Places For Most Deprived At Record High

The number of 18-year-olds from the most deprived areas being offered a place at university is at a record high - up 32% since 2019, the last year there were exams.   The latest UCAS data also shows 29,630 Scottish domiciled students have been offered a place at a Scottish university on SQA results day - up 6% compared to 2019 and the second highest on record.
