Consumer Price Inflation UK - July 2024 - 2.2%

The Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) rose by 3.1% in the 12 months to July 2024, up from 2.8% in June 2024.   On a monthly basis, the level of CPIH was little changed in July 2024, compared with a fall of 0.3% in July 2023.

Riots Led To Near 5% Decline In High Street Footfall And 2.5% Jump In Home Deliveries

Continued rioting and public unrest across the UK at the beginning of last week led to a significant 4.8% decline in the number of shoppers visiting High Streets, as some town centre stores were vandalised and looted.  In parts of the north of England, footfall was down by as much as 12.9%.

Significant Progress With Final Disposal Of Radioactive Waste At Repository Site

Works begin on the next phase of operations to close historic trenches and vaults at the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) site in Cumbria.   Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), which manages the disposal of the UK's low level radioactive waste, is carrying out important work on the final capping of legacy disposal trenches and vaults which are now full and ready for permanent closure.

A cancer charity has joined forces with the Scottish Government to urge people with cancer to check if they could be eligible for disability benefits.   Cancer Card Scotland founder Jen Hardy MBE and Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Shirley-Anne Somerville, want people with cancer to ensure they're getting the money they could be entitled to.
