Council Look To External Funders To Help Tackle Fuel Poverty & Meet Energy Efficient Home Standards

Highland Council has been investigating ways in which it can harness external funding to help meet its statutory obligations around energy efficient social housing and at the same time tackle fuel poverty.   Members at yesterday's (5 October 2023) Climate Change Committee were asked to note opportunities to expand Energy Company Obligation funding to Council housing stock.

Climate Change Committee Members Note Progress On Council's New Non-domestic Building Heating Policy

Highland Council is working on a new and defined policy/guidance for the provision of heating within schools, offices, leisure facilities and other types of non-domestic buildings.   Although many buildings already operate within normal parameters, there are known instances where temperature setpoints and operational hours have been found to be out with expected parameters, to the detriment of good energy performance, budget management and comfort.

New £88 Million Sensing Equipment To Protect UK Armed Forces

New technology with capability to detect, identify and monitor the presence of toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents to be operational by 2028.   UK Armed Forces personnel will be better protected on the battlefield through world-leading chemical detection sensors, under an £88 million contract announced today.

28 Community Councils Including Bower In Caithness Fail To Get Enough Nominations

The election day is scheduled for Monday, 27 November 2023 and voting is by means of a postal vote.  The maximum membership of each of the Highland Community Councils is determined by the population it serves and varies from 7 to 13 members.

Official Receiver Secures Multimillion Payout For Scam Victims

Scammer was due a large financial compensation award but Official Receiver worked with partners to ensure funds were used to repay his victims.   John Gerard Metcalfe, from Essex, was declared bankrupt in 2013 following legal action after he defrauded several individuals and at least one company as part of an investment scam he had run, which saw the victims lose over £2 million.

Highland Council Launches Local Authority's Net Zero Strategy

Highland Council's Net Zero Strategy was launched at today's (5 October 2023) meeting of the local authority's Climate Change Committee.   The Strategy sets out the Council's approach to addressing the climate emergency and contributes towards Scotland's national legally binding target to become Net Zero by 2045.  Highland Council has adopted the Scottish Government's Net Zero by 2045 target, aiming to achieve this sooner.

JET Experiments To Test Electronics In Fusion Environments

A joint study at the Joint European Torus, investigating the impact of neutrons on electronics, will be a vital step for future fusion facilities.   A joint study by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), CERN, EUROfusion, CEA-IRFM, Aix-Marseille University (AMU), CNRS and University of Rennes, at the Joint European Torus (JET) facility in Culham, Oxfordshire, will investigate the impact of neutrons on the performance of electronics exposed to fusion energy conditions.
