Rhoda Grant MSP Attacks SNP/Greens Again On Ferries Issue

"Out of sight, Out of mind" approach by this Scottish Government on ferries and compensation for island businesses.   In the Scottish Parliament Chamber today, Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant accused the SNP-Green Government for taking an out of sight, out of mind approach on island communities following further ferry withdrawal and protests in South Uist.

Tackling Some Token Gesture Tax Issues Will Not End The Egregious Inequality Built Into The UK Tax System

The Good Law Project issued a press release this morning saying, "Good Law Project and Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, have launched a legal challenge against HM Revenue and Customs demanding the closure of a loophole which allows private equity fund managers to pay almost half the tax they should".   Back in 1987 the private equity industry successfully lobbied the Inland Revenue, now HMRC, to pay less tax.

Proposed new laws to help strengthen public confidence in standards of police conduct have been published.   The Scottish Government's Police (Ethics, Conduct and Scrutiny) (Scotland) Bill has been introduced to Parliament with the aim of ensuring allegations of misconduct are dealt with more transparently and effectively.

Startling New Figures Show Emissions From Transport & Storage Sector Fall 9% But Soar 7% For Consumers And Energy Producers

The transport & storage sector's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 9% in 2021 and are now 40% less than they were in 2000.  However, the home delivery expert ParcelHero says that, while logistics operators are playing their part in slashing pollution, consumers' emissions rose by 7% in 2021.

UK Environmental Accounts: 2023

Measuring the contribution of the environment to the economy, impact of economic activity on the environment, and response to environmental issues.   UK greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a residence basis increased by 3% to just over 502 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt Co2e) between 2020 and 2021.

CMA increases informant reward up to £250K to crack down on cartels.   The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is strengthening its enforcement work against illegal cartels and offering a reward of up to £250,000, increased from £100,000, to people who tell the CMA about unlawful cartel activity they have witnessed.

OPEC Oil Production Reduction Likely To Send Fuel Prices Up Again

Saudi Arabia and other Opec+ members have announced voluntary cuts to their oil production of about 1.15m barrels a day in a surprise move they said was aimed at supporting market stability.   OPEC observers also say the group needs nominal oil prices to be higher because of money printing by the West in recent years has lowered the value of the U.S.

UK Car Production Up In April As Exports Surge

British car manufacturing output up 9.9% in April with 66,527 units rolling off factory lines.   Exports surge 14.7% in the month with more than eight in 10 UK-made cars heading overseas.

Councillors Agree Funding For 2023/24 Inverness Area Winter Payment Scheme

£0.2m Inverness Common Good Funding will be used to help people most at need to heat their homes this winter in the Inverness area.   Members of The Highland Council's City of Inverness Area Committee have agreed to provide a Winter Discretionary Payments Scheme for eligible people in the Inverness area for 2023/24.

Youth Worklessness Due To Ill-heath Has Almost Doubled In A Decade - And Is Heavily Concentrated Among Those With Poor Qualification Levels

Economic inactivity due to ill health among 18-24 year-olds has nearly doubled over the past decade, and is heavily concentrated among those struggling with education.  Four-in-five young people who are too ill to work having only qualifications at GCSE-level or below, according to new research published today (Monday) by the Resolution Foundation.

Thousands Of Asylum Seekers To Be Moved Out Of Hotels

More than 5,000 asylum seekers will be accommodated on vessels and in alternative sites to drive down the cost of expensive hotels.   The announcement is the latest step in the government's ongoing work to slash the number of hotels being used for asylum seekers, which currently costs the UK taxpayer £6million a day.
