Quoybrae - Store Sheep Sale - 4th October 2007
QUOYBRAE, Aberdeen & Northern Marts (4th October) sold 6,852 Store Sheep Ewe Lambs (1,108) averaged �28.17 and sold to �51 for Half-Breds from C MacAdie & Sons, Skaill, Thurso Wedder Lambs (1,275) averaged �22.63 and sold to �30 for Half-Breds from J Banks, The Broo, John O'Groats.   Cross Lambs (4,023) averaged �26.55 and sold to �34 for Suffolks from A S Budge, Milton Farm, Halkirk.  
Particles Could Be Cleaned Up Earlier Than Expected
The clean-up operation for radioactive particles offshore could be substantially complete within seven years while onshore monitoring with removal of detected particles would continue for a longer period if UKAEA's recommended way forward is accepted.   Following a review of all the information gained from public consultation, studies, test & trials, independent expert reports, improvements in the monitoring technologies and the knowledge gained by offshore mapping surveys, it is believed that an environmentally and publicly acceptable clean up could be achieved within this timescale.

National Skills Academy for Nuclear Approved by Government
An employer-led proposal has won government approval from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) for the creation of a National Skills Academy for Nuclear.   The announcement made by the Skills Minister David Lammy, 24th September 2007, follows the evaluation of a detailed business plan which was submitted to the DIUS in May 2007.

Management from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine have spent this week at Dounreay learning how Britain is decommissioning its fast reactor programme.   The primary interest of the delegation has been to share and compare the experience of Chernobyl in managing the change from reactor operations to decommissioning.

REACTOR CLEAN-UP TEAM REACH SAFETY MILESTONE Safety and environmental performance is a way of life for staff and contractors working at Dounreay's Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR).  They have clocked up a thousand days without a lost time accident - a commendable achievement given the enormous range of decommissioning work undertaken at the plant and the mix of companies involved.

Quoybrae Mart Report 3 September 2007
QUOYBRAE, Aberdeen & Northern Marts (3rd September) sold 6,133 Store Lambs at the re-sheduled first combined sale from Dunbeath, Bettyhill, Forsinard and North West Sutherland areas.   Overall average was �29.06 showing a decrease of �2.05 from Dunbeath & Bettyhill areas and a decrease of �1.24 on all other areas from last year.

First Ward Forum Meeting For Wick - 11 September from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm
The first Ward Forum for The Highland Council electoral ward of Wick will take place in the Norseman Hotel, Wick on Tuesday 11 September from 7.00 pm - 9.00 pm.   The meeting will be held in public and there will be a 20 minute session at the close of the meeting for the public to ask questions.

Energy Minister, Malcolm Wicks and David Cairns, MP, Minister of State at the Scotland Office will travel north to attend the Caithness Conference.   The conference to be held on 14th September 2007 will identify the actions needed to grow existing or attract new business to the area to offset the impact of the reduction of jobs at Dounreay as the decommissioning progresses.

Council on Line to meet Energy Management Targets
Energy management measures are beginning to pay dividends for The Highland Council and further investments are proposed to meet targets set by the Council's Administration to reduce energy use and carbon emissions by 15% and increase renewable energy sources by a minimum of 4,000 kw by 2010.   The Highland Council's Resources Committee was told this week that at the end of the first year of the Council's energy management performance plan, an overall decrease in energy consumption of 16% was achieved and almost �1 million of costs avoided.

Meeting Demand for Building Warrants
To help meet the increasing demand for building warrants and completion certificates, The Highland Council's Resources Committee has agreed to create three additional posts of building standards officer.   The new staff will be based in the Council's offices at Dingwall, Fort William and Kingussie.
