Businesses emerging from the Covid-induced cocoon of furlough payments used to retain their workforce since the pandemic struck are now facing the cold wind of scrutiny as HMRC gears up to claw back any cash that may have been handed over in error, writes Christine Rolland, forensic accounting director at Henderson Loggie. As the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme grant payments come to an end this month, the message from the tax man is clear: volunteer information about any furlough claims that may have been wrongly submitted and repay the amount owed to the taxpayer, or face higher penalties, and possibly prison, if it's found out later that claims have been overstated or made fraudulently.

200 events open to the public across the two weeks during the climate change summit. New green paper establishes government's view on how to put in place the regulatory framework needed. The Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has temporarily exempted parts of the CO2 industry from competition law to help provide further security of CO2 supplies. Competition laws temporarily suspended for CO2 firms to further ensure supplies to UK businesses and collaborate on a sustainable market-based solution.
The ballot for Pentland tenants to decide if they want to transfer to Cairn Housing Association has opened with participants able to easily vote by post, phone, text message or online. The transfer will only go ahead if a majority of tenants vote YES before the ballot closes on 2nd November.

The two-gigawatt proposal - named the West of Orkney Windfarm – has the potential to power more than two million homes and is currently being assessed by the Crown Estate Scotland. The bid is the culmination of five years of engagement between the consortium and stakeholders in Caithness and Orkney, which includes Memorandums of Understanding with Orkney Harbour Authority and Scrabster Harbour Trust to enhance port infrastructure and position the area more competitively to support offshore wind projects in the future.
