People facing homelessness will have better access to support with new legislation coming into effect later this year. Last year the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Group recommended changes to homelessness laws, and analysis of consultation responses published today show support for the measures.

The SNP Government has hammered Highland Council with cuts to its budget, putting lifeline services at risk. New figures from the independent Scottish Parliament Information Centre (Spice) show that between 2013-14 and 2018-19, the local authority's budget was cut by £176 per person in real terms.
Start-up businesses in the Outer Hebrides could receive a welcome injection of capital from a new joint initiative by Business Gateway Outer Hebrides and Highlands and Islands enterprise. The Outer Hebrides Young Entrepreneur Start-Up Scheme (OHYESS), will provide grants of up to £2,500 to support entrepreneurs age 18-40 to set up businesses in key sectors across the Outer Hebrides.

One third (33 per cent) of vehicles failed new MOT tests brought in last year. Drivers in Greater London have the safest vehicles - with 67 per cent of vehicles in this region passing the test.

The Office for National Statisitics has today published its first in a series of articles providing new data and analysis on towns in England and Wales. The analysis includes 1,186 urban areas covering more than half (56%) of the population in England and Wales.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has welcomed an international technology-led services and payments specialist as the newest tenant to Thurso Business Park. The agency has developed the park to enable local firms to expand and to attract new companies into the area.

To foster greater entrepreneurship within Scottish agriculture and rural communities, Royal Bank of Scotland is working with the Scottish Association for Young Farmers (SAYFC), the Rural Youth Project (RYP) and the NFU Scotland Next Generation to offer an extension of its Entrepreneur Accelerator programme.

According to the latest Royal Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs, labour market trends in Scotland continued to improve in June, but there were signs that hiring conditions were cooling as permanent placements growth eased and temp billings declined for the first time in 18 months. Meanwhile, job vacancies in Scotland rose at weaker rates.

Lending data published today shows that RBS is a major supporter of the UK economy, lending a total of over £169bn in mortgages, personal loans and business loans to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The detailed local lending data, which forms part of a joint data reporting exercise with UK Finance and other major UK banks, gives a snapshot of lending balances in 120 postcode areas across Great Britain and around 10,000 postcode sectors at the end of December 2018.

Climate emergency headlines and programmes such as the BBC's War on Plastic are driving consumers to take action against single-use plastic. In Scotland alone, around 224,000 tonnes of plastic waste is collected from Scottish households each year - and if not recycled correctly, can end up in landfill.

Highland Council's Environmental Health team has identified raised levels of naturally occurring algal toxins following routine monitoring in coastal waters at Loch Eishort. Eating shellfish such as mussels, cockles, oysters or razor fish from these areas may pose a health risk arising from the consumption of these algal toxins.
Police Scotland has asked for an independent review into the death of a man whose body was recovered from Wick Harbour more than 20 years ago. Senior representatives of Police Scotland and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service met with the family of Kevin Mcleod earlier today to inform them that, following consultation with the Lord Advocate, Chief Constable Iain Livingstone has requested Merseyside Police carry out a detailed review of the case under the direction of the Crown.
