Multi- agency partners provide support to annual festive safety initiative, Operation Respect
With the approach of the festive season, multi-agency partners have once again joined forces to support Operation Respect with the aim of making the streets of Inverness safer for shoppers and party goers, both day and night, during the festive season.   Supported by Inverness Community Safety Partnership and the Operation Respect multi-agency group, the city will see increased high visibility police patrols, as well as the use of Inverness Business Improvement District (BID) Security Task Team members and Taxi Marshals, the British Red Cross and Inverness Street Pastors.

A second island alliance between university researchers in Orkney and a distillery on Islay has seen a new single malt whisky made from an ancient barley variety released this month.  Bruichladdich Distillery's Bere Barley 2008 is now available at selected Global Travel Retail outlets.  
Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership - Update
Week Commencing 24th November 2014 Energy & Business services: Delighted to meet up this week with Dan Pearson of the MeyGen project as he gave an update on progress with the project to Caithness Councillors in Wick.  It was good to hear that contracts for onshore works are now in place, and that works will be taking place over the winter at the onshore site near Gills.

Highland Council raises concerns over Universal Credit
Highland Council has raised concerns regarding Council tenants who are affected by Universal Credit, at a meeting of the Resources Committee on 26 November.   Chair of Resources, Maxine Smith said: "The exact number of people affected is unknown, however, we are aware of 32 households who are in receipt of Universal Credit of which 30 households are in rent arrears.

The Scottish Government will establish a new wave energy technology development body.  Wave Energy Scotland will be tasked with bringing together the best engineering and academic minds to collaborate on innovative projects that will accelerate the development of wave technologies.

StepChange Debt Charity Welcomes Government Announcements on Payday Loan Marketing
Following yesterday's announcement that the government has asked the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) to broaden the remit of its review of payday loan advertising to include the appropriateness of scheduling as well as content, and that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will consult on unsolicited marketing calls for payday loans, Mike O'Connor, chief executive of StepChange Debt Charity, said: "We are extremely pleased that the government has recognised the potential harm caused to millions of people through payday loan marketing.  We know that many people are drawn into a cycle of unaffordable borrowing through tempting offers that are clearly unaffordable and prevention is a welcome step forward." Children and advertising "Today's families are increasingly vulnerable to falling into a cycle of damaging problem debt.

Highland Council has saved over £476k and cut carbon emissions through reduced business mileage
Highland Council has saved a total of over £476k and cut carbon emissions through reduced business mileage over the past 4 years.   Councillors' total expenses have reduced by 10.1% and the cost of reimbursing employees for mileage has reduced by 15.9%.

The next phase of The Highland Council's on-going programme to check its properties for levels of naturally occurring radon gas is to take place in 34 schools throughout the region commencing in December 2014.   The programme is risk based, with previous testing focused on housing and schools considered to be in higher risk areas.

HIAL Supports Devolving of Air Passenger Duty
Inglis Lyon, MD of Scottish regional airport operator HIAL, said: "We welcome the Smith Commission's proposals to devolve APD to Scotland.   Although flights departing from the Highlands and Islands are exempt from APD, the tax does apply to cross border flights into Inverness, which account for 87% of its passenger traffic, and to arriving and departing flights at Dundee.

Highland Council agrees £164k funding for welfare advice and support
THE Highland Council Resources Committee has approved the use of £163,920 from the Council's Welfare Fund to provide tailored welfare advice clinics across the Highlands, through the CAB network, starting in the New Year, from January 2015 until March 2016.  This includes £3,000 to provide specialist training for CAB workers to provide advice to people with mental ill health.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (November, 26th) sold 561 weaned calves and store cattle, 27 adult head of breeding cattle 149 OTM cattle.  Weaned bullocks (234) averaged 248p and sold to 307.7p per kilo for a 195kg Limousin cross from Cranford, Gollanfield, and £1,260 gross for a 565kg Charolais cross from Torgormack, Beauly.

"End the uncertainty over schools and savings for less than a pound a week" says Highland Council Independent Group
The 34-strong Independent Group at Highland Council is calling on the people of the Highlands to help protect the vital services that the SNP/LibDem/Lab coalition is willing to sacrifice in the name of austerity.   Cllr Carolyn Wilson, Leader of the Independent Group said: "Despite the recent announcement of a u-turn on the length of the school day by Cllr Maxine Smith, Budget Leader on behalf of the SNP/LibDem/Lab coalition, we are still extremely concerned about the lack of clarity around the shortening of the school day.

Highland Council removes reduction in school week from immediate proposals
The SNP/LibDem/Labour Administration of Highland council today announced that, having listened to the concerns of the public regarding proposals to reduce the primary school week, they have decided to remove the proposal from year 1 (2015/16), to allow further work on the detail and to minimise any impact on schools.   Budget Leader, Maxine Smith (Scottish National Party) said: "We are currently considering the responses to our consultation and listening carefully to what people are saying and early feedback suggests there are major concerns regarding the primary school week.

An employee from a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Central Scotland got a nasty surprise, when he woke up to see a demonstrator vehicle he'd been authorised to take home, had been stolen off his drive.  Fortunately, the AMG Mercedes worth over £50,000, was fitted with a TRACKER Plus for Mercedes-Benz stolen vehicle recovery unit, which was key in helping police recover the car before the end of the same day.
