Highland Focus on Scams Awareness Month
Trading Standards Officers of The Highland Council are taking part in a national campaign ~ Scams Awareness Month - to crack down on the misery and heartache caused by unscrupulous scammers, whose sole aim is to persuade consumers to part with their money.   Working jointly with the Office of Fair Trading, they are focusing on consumer education to help the public spot a scam and are encouraging the public to hand in to designated Council offices scam literature received this month.

A team of Construction students from Inverness College UHI have laid the foundations for a successful career in the construction industry by clinching first prize at the annual Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Student Challenge in Perth - the fifth time that an Inverness College team has taken the top spot.   The HND students triumphed over teams from Glasgow Caledonian University, Heriot-Watt University, Robert Gordon University and other Scottish colleges with their technical and general knowledge of the construction industry, as well as their team project which was to produce a design brief for a proposed commercial and leisure development.

New Company To Promote Health Science In Inverness
A new company has been set up to promote the fast growing Centre for Health Science in Inverness.   The first phase of the centre was officially opened last January and comprises a nurse and midwifery training centre, NHS Education for Scotland (NES), a new library for the Highland health care workforce and facilities for healthcare meetings and conferences.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Agency has announced that it will invest £8 million in plans to create the UK's National Nuclear Archive (NNA) in, Wick Caithness, Scotland.  The NNA will potentially hold between 20 and 30 million digital records primarily concerning the history, development and decommissioning of the UK's civil nuclear industry since the 1940s.

Council Set Out Concerns on Post Office Closure Consultation
The Highland Council has highlighted a number of concerns in its draft response to Post Office Ltd's consultation on post office closures across the UK.   The response will be considered by councillors at a special meeting of the full Council on Thursday 14 February.

HIE HOSTS DISCUSSION ON PROPOSALS FOR A SCOTTISH CLIMATE CHANGE BILL
Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is to host a workshop next Wednesday (February 13) to discuss best methods of reducing gas emissions in order to temper climate change.   The Scottish Government last week launched a consultation on proposals for a Scottish Climate Change Bill.

Council Commitment to Keeping Highland Communities Cleaner
The Highland Council is set to spend an additional £1 million in the new financial year in keeping Highland communities cleaner and tidier.  The commitment to community works is a priority of the Council Administration and, subject to confirmation by the full Council on 14 February, communities will see:- - Increased levels of education and enforcement in littering and dog fouling by employing three enforcement officers (£90,000); - Increased standards of litter picking and street cleaning by employing an additional 17 street cleansing staff (£500,000); - Increased standards of grounds maintenance by employing the equivalent of 34 additional seasonal grounds maintenance operatives (£410,000).

It's already been cut from 100 years to 25 years.  Now, the timescale for cleaning up and knocking down Dounreay has been accelerated to just 90 seconds in a new video showing how the site will look when decommissioning is complete.

CAITHNESS FIRM WINS £7.4 MILLION CONTRACT Local engineering firm JGC Engineering & Technical Services Ltd has been awarded a major contract vital to the environment and decommissioning of the Dounreay site.  Following a competitive tendering exercise UKAEA has awarded a £7.4 million contract to the company to replace the current ventilation system within the Fuel Cycle Area.

Highland And Islands Food Producers Asked To Join National Discussion
Food producers in the Highlands and Islands are being encouraged to join the national discussion on the future of Scotland's food.   At the Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Forum, Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead urged people in the area to get involved in the development of a national food policy.

Highland Council Invests £431,000 In Home For Elderly At Pulteney House, Wick
Pulteney House, Wick, a care home for 18 older people, was officially reopened today (Friday 1st February) following a £431,000 refurbishment.  This is the sixth Highland run care home to be refurbished under the Council's programme of improvements at a total cost so far of £2.3 million.
