Highland Council winter road condition and school closure report for Tuesday 13 January 2026

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Mid and East Ross, and Black Isle

Road temperatures below zero first thing this morning, with pockets of frost across the area. All priority roads given a precautionary treatment.

Caithness

Primary and secondary routes being treated as required, with reports of ice on some secondary routes. One car off the road at Dunnet, with no other known issues to report.

Sutherland

Sheltered areas affected with frost and icy patches. These are being treated in order of priority and in line with policy.

Skye and Raasay

Morning road surface temperatures were higher than expected in South Skye. North Skye road surface temperatures were below freezing and action continued as directed. No other known overnight issues reported.

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh

Ploughs were out on some main Strategic A-class roads this morning due to dipping road surface temperatures. Conditions generally reported as fair. There were no reported overnight calls. The Bealach na Ba remains closed due to drifting snow - another effort will be made today to reopen it.

Lochaber

No overnight issues. Positive road surface temperatures apart from at Lochaline, which was monitored this morning.

Nairn

Temperatures higher than forecast on lower routes. Primary and Secondary routes are being treated as well as footpaths and higher routes. No known overnight issues.

Inverness

Damp roads and low road surface temperatures, so action on primary and secondary routes, with no known issues.

Badenoch and Strathspey

Negative temperatures throughout the area this morning with frost and ice covering the network. All routes as well as footpaths being treated. No known overnight issues.

Rural AI Roadshow starts in Inverness Today 27 January

Led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in the Highlands and Islands, the Rural AI Roadshow conference runs across Scotland in January 2026 with events in Inverness (27 Jan), Dundee (28 Jan) and Gretna (29 Jan).   Each event will bring together business leaders, innovators and practitioners to explore the potential of AI to support rural economies.

Members reappointed to the Board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise

The Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic, Kate Forbes MSP, today announced the reappointments of Simon Cotton and David Wilson as Members of the Board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise.   Simon Cotton has over a decade of experience of running textile manufacturing businesses in the HIE region, including Johnstons of Elgin and Macnaughton Holdings.

HIE Chairman Visiting Caithness and Moray Via Uist and Benbecula

Angus Campbell, Chair of HIE, visited the Outer Hebrides last week to see the ambition in Uist and Benbecula as he begins a wider tour to meet staff, businesses and community groups.   Over the next few weeks, I'll be travelling across the Highlands and Islands to meet HIE staff, businesses and community groups.

Science Skills Academy launches new Green Skills module for Highland secondary schools

Secondary pupils across Highland are being offered new Green Skills learning with a ground-breaking module from the Science Skills Academy.   Developed as part of Green Skills Pathway - Highland, with funding from SSE Renewables' Highland Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), Green Skills is designed for S1 and S2 pupils.

Regional Edge returns with £400k funding available for 20 businesses

Scottish EDGE is set to provide more opportunities for entrepreneurs living outside the central belt thanks to a second round of its successful Regional EDGE competition.   Backed by £400,000 of Scottish Government funding, the competition is open for applications from 9am on 14 January 2026.

Artmachine expands into new energy efficient premises

A Shetland-based design and signage company has entered an exciting new chapter moving to larger, greener premises with support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).   Established in 1992, Artmachine began as a vinyl graphics and design studio and soon expanded into signage services across Shetland and Orkney.

Screen Machine to be brought back to rural communities

A £1.49m project to build a brand-new Screen Machine - Scotland's mobile cinema, will ensure that rural and island communities can enjoy the latest films close to home.   For almost 30 years, Screen Machine has served more than 34,000 people across 44 communities, half of them on islands, offering a digital cinema experience where no permanent cinema exists.
