Police in Highlands and Islands report numbers detected during national seatbelt day of action.
Police Scotland Highland and Islands Division report that 33 people were found to be within vehicles without wearing a seatbelt during the national day of action, which ended yesterday morning.
The national 24-hour long initiative saw a total of 378 vehicle occupants detected committing such an offence across the country, 33 of which were within the Highlands and Islands.
Divisional Head of Road Policing, Inspector Neil Lumsden said: "Over the 24 hour period, officers across the Division carried out a great number of vehicle checks and from that respect I am encouraged to see that there was a relatively low number found to be committing such offences.”
He continued: "That being said, it is unfortunate that 33 people have chosen to be within a moving vehicle without a seatbelt given the amount of safety information available and the warning technology that exists within many vehicles to remind occupants to belt up.
"Whilst the number detected is low, I want to see it reduce even further, so I would ask everyone who is driving or a passenger within any vehicle to make sure you've clicked before you set off.”
Whilst the focus was on the use of seatbelts during the day of action, Police are advising that they will remain vigilant on this crime throughout the year as part of regular policing patrols.
