One to one export advice for Highlands and Islands businesses

30th October 2013

Businesses in the Highlands and Islands interested in exporting to Central Europe are being offered a one to one business clinic in Inverness with an international business adviser.

The free 45 minute sessions being held on November 7 have been organised by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Scottish Development International (SDI).

Any business thinking of moving into or further developing markets in locations including Germany, Austria and Switzerland can discuss their plans with Sarah Lord, SDI’s Regional Manager for Central Europe.

Gillian MacGregor, HIE’s business support development manager, commented: “After the USA, Scotland’s top export markets are all in Europe – and the value of exports destined for countries within the European Union is estimated at over £11 billion.

“Legislation has made it easier, faster and more cost effective to do business across the 27 EU states. In fact it’s now almost as easy to trade across Europe as it is to within UK borders. There are opportunities across a range of sectors including food and drink, energy, life sciences, business services and creative industries. We’d be delighted to discuss how the sessions could help your business.”

Sarah has over 20 years’ professional experience in Economic Development, International Business Development, International Marketing (B2B), Inward Investment, and Regeneration. She has lived and worked in Germany for last 5 years, for both UKTI and SDI.

She commented: “The Central European region has a total of 14 countries within it and Germany, Switzerland and Austria in particular offer enormous potential for export opportunities for Scottish companies. Germany alone has a population of over 80 million people and is the largest market in Europe.

“We can help your business with research and by introducing you to vital networks and events. There is a long history of trading between Germany and Switzerland and Scotland. Companies generally have a lot of familiarity and a warm, open attitude.”

This event is organised as part of Smart Exporter, an international trade skills programme designed to increase skills and knowledge amongst Scottish businesses. This initiative is delivered in the Highlands and Islands by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in partnership with Scottish Development International (SDI) with funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
